Having a problem with your Wii remote? Below is a guide on how to repair the most mutual Wii remote problems.

Tilt problems:

1. Check the motion sensors functionality by keeping the remote with the button side facing down. Now tap the button side of the remote versus the palm of your opposite hand, but do not forget to try not to use too much strength when doing this. You may harm your remote by doing this with too much force. Doing this doesn’t take much force, so you don’t incisively have to tap hard to see results.

2. If the solution above doesn’t work, for the duration of game play, you may try placing the remote in a neutral position on a flat surface.

Remote batteries run out fast:

1. A brand new set of alkaline batteries will have to last for up to 30 hours. How long it lasts may depend on a great deal of factors, such as the quality of the battery, age of the battery, type of game being played, remote speaker volume, and even rumble.

2. If you are using rechargeable batteries instead, it is important to know that Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are the only commended batteries you will have to use with your remote. You need to follow the makers guidelines for safety and proper usage. Failure to abide by this may void your warranty.

3. To conserve battery, you may put your Wii into burn-in reduction mode. In burn-in reduction mode, the remote will go into sleep mode if the wii is turned off, or after 5 minutes of inactivity. In most cases, this is the best solution for conserving your battery.

Remote does not rumble

1. Verify that the remotes power isn’t low by going to the HOME menu

2. Verify that the rumble feature is turned ON in the Wii remote settings.

3. The remote must rumble more or less if you go to the Wii menu and point at the Wii button located on the bottom left corner of the screen. You may do this to check that the rumble feature is working. If not, your remote may need repair.

Buttons are not responding:

You may want to check the games manual to see if the non-responding buttons are in truth used in the game as a good deal of games do not use all of the Wii’s buttons or features.

The company was formed when Mark Forti, then a junior at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, formulated the X-zylo™ for a merchandising project. The product’s performance astonished every one who saw it. After stumping his physics professor as to why the object flew, Mark took it to his father, William, who worked in the aerospace industry. When William’s aerodynamicist friends could not explain how it flew so far, William and Mark filed for patents and formed the William Mark Corporation.

If you want to get a good idea of what it looks like and how it flies, look up Airswimmers on the web and watch the videos. They are also on YouTube. It looks and flies just like the videos.

WARNINGS:
This toy does not work outside, because there are too many air currents, and the slightest breeze will send this large balloon flying out of control. It does not work in small apartments or small rooms, because it is too darn big. You need a decent sized house, or an auditorium, church or basketball court to use this. Our house has normal 8-foot ceilings, and a big family room-kitchen area, which works great. Make sure there are no fans running. And it’s a bit too delicate for little kids!

FLYING:
Wow, it really flies! You move forward by flapping the tail back and forth. You steer by flapping more left or more right. You climb and dive with a separate button that tips the shark up or down. With a bit of practice, you can steer wherever you want. Unlike many flying toys, this one really works.

ASSEMBLY:
You need to be somewhat adept at assembling delicate things to build this from the kit. There is a detailed video available that shows every step that is a bit easier to follow than the instructions-the video is highly recommended. The link is given in the instructions, or just search for airswimmers on the web. In any case, take your time, and make sure you have a second person to help.

HELIUM:
Any store that sells helium balloons can fill this for you. It stays inflated for a long time, then the store can top it off. I bought a tank of helium for this, and my guess is I have a lot of refills remaining. It hasn’t deflated appreciably since we got it. The good news is, you use putty (included) to adjust for the amount of helium remaining (neutral buoyancy), so you won’t have to refill often.

OVERALL:
Like many of you, when we saw this, we had to have it. I assembled it carefully, and it works. We’re planning a trip to the community center with a two-story lobby to amaze some of my daughter’s friends. It’s fun, albeit a bit expensive with the currently inflated prices. Once some more of them make it into the country and the price comes down, expect to see more of them.

It’s fun, a bit delicate, it works as advertised. Enjoy!

UPDATE: We’ve had the shark for three weeks. We surprise guests with it every time new folks come over. It still works great, but we’ve had to top off the helium twice. The directions say you can top off with air, but this results in too much loss in buoyancy. So be prepared to refill once every 10 days or so. You can do this anywhere they sell helium balloons, or buy a helium tank. This is not unreasonable, given that the shark is essentially a mylar helium balloon.

We can fly the Air Swimmers just fine at our house. We sell and help our customers with the Air Swimmers which is why we’ve learned a few things about them. We would like to pass along the following information:
1) At high altitudes, you have to overfill the balloon a bit to get the best results. However, DO NOT overfill. Leave creases every two to three inches at least two inches long.
2) We use high grade helium which we purchase from a helium and a welding supplier. The helium sold in portable “party” containers is a mixture of air and helium and should not be used at altitudes above 4,000 feet.
3) We don’t use the supplied tapes to assemble the swimmer. Instead, we use Crazy Glue (a.k.a. CA glue or Super Glue) to attach the fins and gondola and then a couple inches of scotch tape per fin to hold it while the glue dries. It is pretty durable and easy to fix when a feisty kid jumps up, grabs the shark by a fin, and rips it off. Anything can be reattached in just a couple minutes. This method also reduces the overall weight of the Air Swimmer.
4) The Air Swimmer is a Mylar balloon. Helium expands with a rise in temperature and contracts with cooler temperature. Do not put a full air swimmer in a hot car. It will EXPLODE!!!! Putty adjustments are required frequently to keep the Air Swimmer buoyant.
5) The radio controlled Air Swimmers (available only at Toys R Us) weigh more than the infrared version and will not work above 4000 feet in elevation.
6) Watch the Air Swimmer Assembly video on Youtube, however make the following change when you assemble at home: Test the remote control and track prior to assembly. Apply the remote control track to the Air Swimmer prior to application of the fins. If you apply the fins first assembly of the track is more difficult.

People who see it flying are intrigued and delighted. The only thing that could be improved would be the radio reception. Line of sight is critical and even then, it doesnt seem to have the claimed 40ft range. This would be an excellent revision/upgrade. Also it would be nice if repacement parts were provided or at least available by the manufacturer, so you dont have to scrap a whole shark if a fin breaks. Overall it is way fun though! hours of entertainment and soooo many great applications (i enjoy flying mine at the high ceilinged local bar). Until there is a model with better remote reception, this thing really cant be beat for the money. Youl love it.

I knew there was a lot of confusion over what battery you needed for the device so I contacted Universal Remote to ask what I needed and they never bothered to get back to me. I then contacted this reseller and I received a prompt reply to my email indicating what I needed to purchase. I placed my order and within a few days, the battery arrived. I placed it into my MX-3000 remote and have not had any problems to date (which is about 3 months of usage). While I hope not to have to replace the battery anytime soon, I would definitely buy again from this reseller.

I had been researching these units for a few days after reading about one online. The fact that I could cast out from the shore appealed to me so I chose one of the smartcast models. BassPro had the RF10 on sale and the R15 was the price I had expected the R10 to be so I went with the R15. It includes grey scale and water temp as part of the upgrades from the R10 series.

Over the past two weeks I’ve taken the R15 out to 4-5 lakes around my area to test it out. Provided I do a nice steady retrive a smooth display of the bottom is presented. I have also seen a fair amount of fish on the display using the Fish ID function. From what I have read on various newgroup posts this feature should generaly be turned OFF. Instead one is supposed to learn how to identify fish using “raw” sonar returns. So far I have not seen any “fish arches”. I have a feeling I might need to be in deeper water for this to occur.

Overall the detail is nice and there are four options for displaying the 4 gradations of grey in ordet to highlight either weak or strong returns. One of the limilations of using this near the shore is that is does not do well with shallow depths. It lists 2 feet as the minumum but even depths of 3 feet and a bit more seem to confuse it, giving false returns. I have not tested its actual ability to recognize a return as a fish yet. I say this becuase so far I have not taken my tackle out, just the fishfinder in order to concentrate on learning it. I think I will try adding some bait to a line and attaching this to the small hole provided on the bottom of the RSS to see if it will show any fishing coming up to check it out.

I have had the unit lock up here and there, but unpluging the power cable and reinserting it and then turning on the unit again seems to have solved it. The other day I was getting some weird temp readings, it went from 40F and then back to the correct temp of 71F a few times. I also expienced an anomoly with the display. When set to “Black” mode for bottom detail the unit was only displaying 10H/6V pixels of resolution. Not sure what was up with that and I haven’t tested it since then. Perhaps its a battery thing.

Overall I’m really happy with the unit. Sure is nice to be able to see contours of a lake as well as know if fish are in the area. Although the Fish ID might not be perfect you at least know that if nothing is showing on the screen at all to move somewhere else so as to not waste time.

It’s been in both frest and salt water repeatedly without a hiccup. I’ve had it in as much as 60 feet with fairly good resolution, discerning between weeds, rocks and fish
well for the price. Great little unit for the money, for sure-especially if you have a kayak like me. You won’t be disappointed.

Dickinson
Typical of electronic watches has more features than necessary. By accident and reading the instructions in a canoe it started working in about 5 min. Works great shows fish and structure gives depth and water temp even tells time. Only thing I would change is buttons can get pushed accidently while sleeping or doing everyday chores this throws it into a mode other than time. Usually it goes to fishing mode which according to the instructions runs down the battery at a faster rate as it must act as a radio reciever. If the buttons had been shielded it would be a perfect product. service was great they told me it was water resistant some thing I couldn’t find in the instructions. Eventually I plan to use as a bobber/sonar buoy and see the crappie taking the bait how cool is that.

I’d only been sat outside the church at Althorp House for in regards to ten minutes when, out of nowhere, assorted big, severe men appeared, apparently talking to their lapels.

One took-up station by the gate to the churchyard peering intently into middle-distance, another hung-back looking towards where they had come from and the last, biggest and most severe made a bee-line for me. What was going on?

I got out of my car and started to walk towards the huge one, then, behind him, I caught sight of three other people, two of whom were women. This church had abruptly become very busy I thought.

Then it dawned on me – the men were police on royal shelter duties, the three others were Earl Charles Spencer, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and their sister, Princess Diana. They were walking up the hill, Diana carrying her father’s ashes to place in the family vault at the church.

This was inconvenient; my camera was in the boot of my car without film or lens. I ran back to the car, opened the boot and started out to assemble my kit.

The big, severe man was now moving more quickly towards me. I don’t recognise if these queer guys carried guns, but they surely wanted to give me that impression. Hands shaking, I got the film wound onto the spool, closed the back and stepped-out from behind the car.

As soon as the huge men spotted my camera, I saw them relax. This is evidently what they were expecting, so much so that the gentleman who was in regards to to jump on me had stepped back and cleared the way for me to take my pictures.

I got with regards to five frames off on a cheap and nasty Sigma lens on an ancient Canon A1 body. The pictures were in each UK national newspaper the next day, published around the world and still trade now, on occasion.

For that one hours “work” I made £11000. I ought to have made more!

Sounds like fun, and it is, but it’s only a tiny part of being a news or paparazzi photographer.

As for equipment, it’s horses for courses and any professional photographer will have a number of cameras, lenses, flashguns and bits and bobs that will concede you to fulfill any likely brief.

A good quality compact camera is always utile as a “walking-around” camera and to use on those occasions when a full-on, pro SLR would draw to much attention or too galore questions.

For the last few years I have been using an Olympus C7070 wide, even though it’s probably time to buy something a little more progressed now. I chose the Olympus because it has an excellent, fast lens, good low-light performance and a good imaging chip. It’s a little slow to procedure the images, the zoom range is minimal and the flash isn’t great, but it’s done a good occupation over the years and it appears to be indestructible.

One, primary thing to look for is a good shutter response. A camera that takes the picture half-a-second after you push the release is perfectly useless.

There is no compact with the capablenesses of a good SLR so you will have to compromise. I was prepared to forego a little responsiveness to get the lens; you may feel differently so buy accordingly.

As for SLR’s, pro shooters will have several, again for dissimilar occasions and also, crucially, as back-up cameras. Nikon and Canon undoubtedly make the best pro, little format SLR cameras, and no question. The top-end bodies from these makers are fantastic, the quality is stunning, they are built like tanks and they are a joy to use. They are also very, very expensive, weigh a ton and, in a lot of situations, they may be a liability.

As for the pixel count, ask any photographer who sells his pictures and he will tell you that the megapixel count is not everything, without doubt it’s not even the most crucial consideration.

It was less than ten years ago, when digital primary became a severe proposition for news photographers, that Nikon introduced their all-singing Nikon D1 pro-digital camera. This camera is still used today by a lot of pros, and it has a measly 2 megapixel imaging chip, less than almost all compact cameras today.

But this was good enough, as a paparazzo, your images are going to be employed in newsprints and magazines and a pixel count someplace around the 12 million mark will be more than adequate.A higher pixel count will concede you to “pull” images further from within the frame, which may be utile but the low-light performance degrades as the pixel count rises, causing more problems, more often.

Full-frame cameras have an imaging sensor that is, to all purposes and purposes, the same size as a 35mm film frame. This means your costly lenses will be capable to work as they were designed to. Wide-angle lenses will be wide-angle lenses. This is a very, very good thing and, if you may afford it you will have to do it.

Other considerations are build quality, frame rate, processing speeds and the like, although, to be honest, any higher-level, pro-sumer camera from Canon or Nikon will be more than a match for 95% of the situations you will encounter.

You are going to need at least two bodies; most work is done with a 28-70mm on one body and the 70-200mm on the other.

A quick word in regards to face-recognition, anti-red eye, digital zoom, scene acknowledgement and all the other “functions” that are in truth gimmicks. You don’t need them or want them; no capable photographer would use them.

Lenses – These is going to be expensive! Without question you need to be competent to cover 28mm to 200mm with two fast zooms. By fast, I mean big aperture, f/2.8 lenses. They are called fast because they grant you to use a quicker shutter-speed.

A very fast prime-lens may be valuable when the light goes or for portrait work, a macro lens is nice for close-up work or copying pictures and documents and a 300mm lens and doubler are just what you need for “secret-squirrel” jobs, but they may all wait as long as you have the 28mm to 200mm covered.

Top-end lenses have very fast autofocus schemes lately and are in truth indispensible. Others have Vibration Reduction or Image Stabilisation and it works. I have taken tack-sharp pictures at 15th second on a hand-held 300mm lens. If you may afford VR or IS lenses, get them.

Third party lenses by makers such as Sigma and Tamron are worth giving careful consideration to if your budget is tight. They are good, capable and usable lenses, but candidly nowhere near the quality of the pro lenses offered by the huge two. It actually is worth spending a good deal of cash on your glass.

You may want to put good quality, coated UV filters on your lenses to protect the front element, but other than as supposed or expected filters are not necessary for this kind of work.

You will need two, high-power flashguns, one for each body. Most snappers will use the flash units devised by their camera manufacturer even though there are a few good, third-party makers of flashguns. Nikon and Canon both make capable, powerful flash units that comprise effortlessly with the camera scheme and offer some features you will never use. Metz is likewise a very highly regarded flash manufacturer. These German units are well made, high quality items that give Nikon and Canon a run for their cash and are worth considering.

How ofttimes have you heard “hold-on, I’m just waiting for the flash to charge-up”? Of course, Angelina and Brad aren’t going to wait for your flash, so what do you do?

You use an external power pack. These are packs containing some electronics and a sealed battery. I use a Quantum Turbo because it will work with most flashguns, is very, very rugged and will keep my flash going for a whole, busy day. It will not keep up if you are shooting very fast, but for 99% of the time it will re-charge your flash almost instantly. It will also compensate for itself pretty quickly since you will have to buy far less expensive, alkaline batteries.

The power pack furnishes power to the flash through a cable and you ought to get a spare one of these because they do break. You will likewise need to buy an adapter which will grant you to power two flashes from one battery pack.

You are going to need something to carry this lot around in, so a bag is essential. For news work, the most necessary aspect of a bag is how speedily you may get your gear in and out of it. Backpacks are a non-starter as are bags with thick, modular padding.

I use Domke bags, others prefer Billingham or Lowepro. A tripod and monopod are always usefully kept in the boot of your car and numerous lens cleaning liquid and wipes will have to be in your bag along with spare batteries and memory cards, notebook and pen.

All this shiny, costly kit is very nice, but you have to know how to use it and what it is idiosyncrasies are. You need to take the time to learn the equipment. A good way of doing this is to use it at a wedding or school sports day, any photography that requires you to think on your feet and adjust speedily to changes in light and composition will support you to perceive your cameras with respect to news and paparazzi photography.

So that covers the kit, next is the information, how do you find out where the news is happening? I’ll cover that in my next article.

58 of 58 people found the following review helpful.
OPTEKA Battery Grip for the NIKON D5000
By Danny Reasons
I did a lot of research before I purchased this item, however; there were no reviews on it as it relates to the D5000. The only thing I could ever find is the manufacturer claiming that it fits the D5000 or someone elses review of it for a different camera (D40/D60.)

I’m just getting back into the SLR frame of mind for photo’s and I knew a battery grip was one thing I wanted. The lack of a NIKON grip for the D5000 nearly kept me from purchasing the camera but the D5000 was really a great entry into the dslr arena, so I bought it and the OPTEKA battery grip.

The OPTEKA grip does fit the NIKON D5000 but it’s not a perfect fit. The “tray” that the bottom of the camera is nestled in when they go together is just “slightly” larger than the bottom of the camera. A person who isn’t a camera entheuiast probably wouldn’t notice and from a small distance it’s not noticable but things like this usually bother me! Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a loose fit, the grip fits tight and there is no slop, it’s just that the small raised lip around the top edge of the grip is “slightly” larger then the bottom of the camera! It’s not really an issue but consumers need to know this because this may bother some people! The outer demensions of the grip are virtually identical to the outer demensions of the camera and the look and finish of the grip are pretty much spot on!

When you hold it, it feels similar to the D5000. It appears to have a similar build quaiity to the camera body. It doesn’t add any significant weight to the camera except for you now have two batteries instead of one. This product also comes with a battery cradle that holds six double A batteries so if you get in a pinch you can buy new batteries virtually anywhere! I havn’t tried this out yet!

I was also worried about taking off the cameras battery door to install the grip but that was very easy, it just snapped right out! They even have a slot in the grip for you to put the battery door in so you don’t lose it!

Installation was a breeze. You just gently remove the camera battery door (instructions come with grip) and slide the electronic contacts (male) into the battery receptacle (female.) Then you turn a thumbwheel that turns a bolt (1/4″) that screws into the area on the bottom of the camera where you usually attach a tripod and you’re done. It’s a tight solid fit and it all feels like one piece! The grip also has an area on the bottom of it where you can attach a tripod (1/4″.) It all feels very good in my hands!

After about a month of use I highly recommend this product for anyone who has a D5000. Overall the benefits of this product far outweigh the fact that it may actually have been produced and intended for a “slightly” larger camera. It is a wonderful product that I am very happy with and it adds to my enjoyment of my D5000.

I can’t comment on the vertical shutter release as I personally have no interest in this feature as of yet.

fit…………………………9 of 10
looks…………………….10 of 10
ease of assembally…….10 of 10
operational value………10 of 10 (don’t have to change betteries as often.)
value for the $……….10 of 10 (if NIKON made one it would cost much more.)

hope this helps someone.

Wilson
I must say that I am quite happy with this item. It fits well onto my D40, the finish is excellent, and it gives the camera a whole new “personality”. I have the Sigma 18-200mm lens, which is much bigger and heavier than the 18-55mm kit lens. This makes the camera more awkward as the center of gravity is now different. This causes my wrist to tilt forward instead of keeping the camera balanced. I have an ongoing issue with my wrist, due to a prior injury, and noticed that with the heavier lens the camera had to be gripped in a way that was a bit painful to me. With this battery grip I am able to grip the camera much better! The weight of the batteries in the bottom of the grip plus the change in the center of gravity makes it much easier for me to hold the camera properly.

I do not like the vertical shutter function at all, but I blame this on the D40 itself and not the grip. Hey, at least Opteka tried, it just doesn’t work well for me. I had issues with getting the shutter to release, but I have had the same issue with the wireless remote so I don’t blame the grip for this.

The option of using AA batteries with this grip was important to me as well, as I like the flexibility of having multiple power options.

Here are my rankings (1-10):

Appearance: (8)- Certainly gives the D40 a much different, more pleasing and professional look.

Fit and finish: (8)- The “crackle” finish is perfect, and even in bright sunlight looks exactly like the finish on the D40. The color is slightly off; it’s slightly lighter in color than the D40. It is not a HUGE difference, but it is detectable. My grip fit slightly crooked, with the right side a few millimeters lower than the left side. Again, this was very minor but detectable.

Ease of installation: (9)- Very simple, the hardest part was taking off the battery door (I didn’t want to break it) but this is a D40 issue, not the battery grip issue. The grip fit into the battery compartment and attached to the tripod mount perfectly. I would have preferred some better markings on the cartridge that holds the two batteries, but they fit well and the cartridge slid into the grip with ease.

Ease of use: (9)- The vertical shutter button is not an easy feature to use, but this is more the fault of the D40 than the battery grip. Once the grip is in place it feel like a natural extension of the camera.

Comfort: (7)- The grip feels good in my hand, although I can feel the vertical shutter button on my palm, which is minor annoyance to me.

Value: (7)- For a $100 item I would like to have seen a charger included for charging both batteries at once. I feel that a lot of the cost was for the vertical shutter option, which I won’t use often, if at all.

Overall: (8)- Overall this is a very good item and I would recommend it for someone who wants longer life between battery charges as well as the flexibility to use AA batteries. I would also highly recommend this product for users who have a heavy lens on the D40 as it makes the camera much easier to hold properly. I would not suggest this item exclusively for the vertical shutter feature as it doesn’t work very well, although this is a D40 issue and not an issue of the battery grip.

Comes with 2 batteries it also has a normal battery adapter if you need to use store boughts to get by…

I have a 55-200mm Lens and with the battery grip it has a nice feel and loads of battery life.

The side (portrait ) button only works in conjunction with the infrared sensor , so while it does work .. its not like the main button….

The grip slides in nice and matches the D40.

Have you ever wanted to trace a cell phone and find out the emplacement of the caller. There are services available that will let you preform discreet searches. The cell phone proprietor will never know they have been tracked down.

A decent reverse cell phone trace will disclose the callers full name and address, date of birth, address history, and numerous services will provide any criminal or other very personal records on that person. The firstborn time I used a reverse call search I was finelooking shocked at what info was available on me.

One of the gains of getting a fellow member of a salaried service is that you may request your data to be got rid of from their system! There are free services but I found them a finish waste of time. Almost all of them portion a public data selective information base that is worthless. You might get back the state or city the call is from.

Joining a salaried service is worth the one time fee but I found the best option is to go for the each year membership. I learned this the hard way by paying a one time search fee thinking I would never need the service again and then having to pay again a month later when I necessitated to trace down a prank cell phone caller.

Cell phones are a little harder to trace then regular land line phones. The over the counter cell phones that you pre recompense and do not have to give out any info on are almost inconceivable to trace. You may do a preliminary search for free to see if anything is returned. If you get back the city and state you may be sure there is a lot more info available once you join. I even found out my prank callers neighbors.

The info you may now get was once only available to private investigators and law enforcement. But now with a click of your mouse you may have the same access to private selective information that they do ready to print out for your observing pleasure.

With more cell phones using a tracking GPS chip you may now almost pinpoint a cell phone location. This is a outstanding service if you want to track your kids, husband or employees. Want to find out where that bimbo your husband has been seeing behind your back? Get her phone number off of his cell phone and do a reverse call search on it. You will recognise more with regards to her that he does. This could make a heap of actually interesting speech or support in your divorce.

The service likewise comes in handy for those pesky telemarketers that think they are untraceable. These days unlisted will not mean untraceable. An unlisted number might not be available to the public but that does not mean you may not trace it with a reverse call look up service. I discover that prank callers think because they are on a cell phone they are safe are finelooking shocked when you call them back and rattle off their home and work address along with a great deal of other juicy info regarding them. The prank or unknown calls almost always stop without delay after that.

It has as many uses as you can imagine…just be creative. The only thing that keeps this device from being perfect is the range which for me seems to be about 25-30 feet. I put one of these locaters on my cat collar. It’s big but lightweight and the cat doesn’t mind because he’s concentrating on going outside. I go with him but in the past had a hard time keeping track of him. Now I can sit, read, smoke my cigar, enjoy other things while keeping track of him with just the push of a button. When he’s out of sight I press the button and his collar device beeps. gotcha! And when it doesn’t beep I just hold the button in and walk around until it DOES beep. At least then I know I’m within 25 feet of him and can track him. I’m thinking I will attach one to the remote control next.

They work very poorly now; I’ve tried changing batteries with no luck.

UPDATE: I should add that the company read this review and sent me a set of replacement tags. In the meantime, I’d switched to a different system that seems to work fine, so I haven’t tried the new ones, but it is certainly impressive to me that the company read these reviews and responded. On that basis, I would increase the rating if I could.

The Easy 2 Find comes with 2 keychain and 2 stick on units and the remote (plus a nice touch they included extra batteries for everything). I keep the remote in a central place and I attached the key chain to my keys and one to my purse. The stick ons I used for my cellphones. The stick-ons really stick and have survived the wear and tear bouncing around in my purse. The keychain units seem likewise pretty tough (I was concerned about that before purchasing). The beeps are loud enough to hear within the house and it pretty much does as they advertise it. Overall, it does the trick and am happy with my purchase.

So far, I like what I see. I also own a Kindle 3 so that’s the only device I can really compare it to at this time (I think a comparison between other tablets and this Kindle is meaningless, this device is all about content and delivery):

1. Form-factor – Compared to the Kindle 3, this Kindle feels more compact, lighter and easier to hold. My hands wrap around this better than K3. Reading books for a few hours at a stretch will be easier on this device compared to the K3. It is the lightest such device I have used compared to all previous Kindles and other tablets.

2. Screen – I personally like the fact that there are no keys on the device and that keys come up on the screen when you need them. Delivers a better overall reading experience. However, navigating through the on-screen keyboard with the 5-way controller can be taxing if you need to do a lot of searching, and you might miss the full physical keyboard. I hardly search on the Kindle itself, I search for books on my laptop so this is a non-issue.

3. Price! – At $79, you can’t go wrong. Compared to buying paperback or hardcover editions, you will recover the cost of this in a matter of a few months because most Kindle content is priced cheaper than print editions (and you get it instantly, and can access it wherever you are). Not to mention all the free Kindle downloads available in the catalog.

4. Display – almost the same E-ink display at the K3. No glare no reflection. You can sit in bright sunlight and read it just like a book. Page turns seem a lot faster on this compared to the K3. Screen size of the Kindle 3, this new Kindle, and the Touch is exactly the same in size.

5. Wi-Fi – this can be a pro or a con (no 3G) depending on a user’s personal preference. If you travel often and would like to be able to download content anywhere without worrying about getting a wi-fi connection, you’re better off sticking with the K3 or waiting for the Touch/Fire. For me, 3G is not a major issue.

6. Text to Speech and Audiobooks – These two features are lacking in this device. I personally have never used these features on my K3. If you listen to audiobooks or TTS or music on your Kindle, again the K3/Touch/Fire might be better options.

7. Storage – this device can store 2GB which they claim is approximately 1400 books. For me, that’s a massive storage capacity and it will be years before I get close to that capacity. Again, if you download books occasionally and have a moderate Kindle downloaded content on your device, 2GB is plenty. Of course, think ahead and see how much you would expect to download in the coming 2 years (I am assuming the device will be outdated and replaced within this time-frame).

8. Battery life – too early to tell but Kindle battery life tends to be great. Specs state that the battery life of this device is 1 month compared to 2 months for the Touch or K3. 1 month is plenty (Android phones need to be charged every hour!). At least I know that if I’m going on a long flight, this device won’t need charging if I charge it up in advance.

9. Power adapter – this Kindle does not come with a power adapter, only a USB charging cable. You can either buy it separately for $8-10, or use your existing USB power adapter. Any USB adapter would work with the charging cable (previous Kindle versions, Apple’s portable devices, and most HTC phones, come with a standard USB power adapter that would work for this device). There are also plenty of $2-3 adapters available here if you search for USB chargers.

Bottom line – the choice between this basic Kindle, the K3 Keyboard, the Touch, and the Fire is really a personal preference. This device itself is meant for the minimalist Kindle user who, like me, reads say a 2-3 books a month, wants a device comfortable to hold, and doesn’t need any fancy bells and whistles on the device. I guess it depends on what you use your Kindle for. If it’s just the basics, this is the perfect device to get.

In my humble opinion, the choices:

(i) If you have a DX or an old Kindle version, or if you don’t have a Kindle yet and are an average book-reader, this is definitely the one to get – baseline model that is affordable and is a pure e-reader.

(ii) If you have Kindle 3 and don’t really need an upgrade, I recommend sticking with the K3, it’s a better device than this one in terms of features. If you do need to upgrade, the Touch is probably a better option because of all the additional features, at a small incremental cost.

(iii) If you’re looking for the loaded full-on Amazon content experience with access to all the apps, streaming audio and video, and playing the “strangely therapeutic” Fruit Ninja, wait for the Fire!

I sincerely hope this review helps you decide whether this Kindle is right for you. If you are still unable to make a decision, it may be worthwhile to wait for the Touch and Fire to be released, and see the reviews on those devices before making a final decision.

Ts
First off, I received my new Kindle this morning. I previously owned the Kindle Keyboard, but actually really didn’t like the keyboard or the way the buttons were pressed together. I’m not a fan of touch screens so I bought this one.

There are a few things to know about this particular Kindle that can help you decide if it’s right for you…

Here is a list of things to know about this Kindle.

1. You’ll be using an onscreen keyboard with the 5-Way Controller. This is not a problem for setting up WiFi and a little writing but if you are an avid note-taker or do a lot of writing with your Kindle, you might want to opt for the Kindle Keyboard.
2. NO AUDIO – If you are planning on listening to audiobooks, Mp3s, or Text to Speech on your Kindle, this is not the device for you. There is not even a headphone jack, so there is absolutely no audio support.
3. 2GB! This device has 2GB of storage, which is half of all the others… if you seriously need to keep over 1,400 books or so on your Kindle, you should opt for one of the others, all of which have 4GB. I only keep a hundred or so books on mine and the rest are up in the Amazon Cloud waiting for convenient download.
4. There’s no 3G version but the WiFi works just fine.
5. There is a shorter battery life. Amazon reports the battery life is only one month of reading, compared with the others that clock in at two months. If you are going to be away from electricity for over a month, first of all RESPECT!, second of all, you may want a Kindle that has the 2 month battery life.
6. It’s lighter than all the other versions. It weighs in at just under 6oz (170g). The closest competition is the Kindle Touch which is about 7.5oz.
7. It has 5 buttons on the face at the bottom. In the middle is the big 5-Way Controller button as found on other Kindles. There are two small buttons on either side of this. On the left side, from left to right are the “Back” button and the “Keyboard” button. The “Back” button is the same as on other Kindles. The “Keyboard” button calls the onscreen keyboard onto the screen. On the right side of the 5-Way Controller are (again, from left to right) the “Menu” button, and the “Home” button. The “Next Page” and “Previous Page” buttons are the same as on other Kindles.
8. Because of the above 5 buttons, I find it much easier to use than the Kindle Keyboard. On the Kindle Keyboard, the “Back” button was right below the 5-Way Controller, and I accidentally hit it on more than one occasion.
9. On the bottom there is only the mini-USB port, the charging light, and the On-Off Button.
10. There are not a whole lot of covers available for this Kindle yet. (Amazon’s won’t be available until the end of October.)

As for reading, and as a pure reading device. It is awesome… in fact, without the keyboard, audio, and other features I don’t need. This is actually the best one for someone like me who just wants to read.

I’ve already successfully transferred my library, downloaded books over WiFi, and borrowed library books through the Overdrive Library eBooks System. My only small point of dissatisfaction is that there are so few good covers and accessories right now (though there ARE some available that look pretty good).

All in all, I believe this is the BEST of all the Kindles currently available. Only consider others if you:
a. Really want the touch screen version.
b. Need audio.
c. Need 4GB
d. Need a big Kindle DX.
e. Take a lot of notes or do a lot of writing that requires a keyboard.
f. Prefer the design of another version.
g. Need more than a month’s battery power.

Hope this helps someone make a good decision!

(Brief update: I love this Kindle, but right now the scarcity of good, inexpensive covers for it is a little troubling. The Amazon made leather one with light won’t be available until November or so and there are currently no inexpensive ones to use in the interim. I’ll just have to use it gently for a month or so.)

Update on cases:
I mentioned this in the comments section, but I’ll repeat it here for people who can’t yet find a good case -

Checking the specifications for the Kindle, Nook Touch, and Kobo:
Nook Touch
6.5 x 5 x 0.5 inches
Kobo Reader
6.5 X 4.5 inches
Kindle (4th Generation)
6.5 x 4.5 x 0.34 inches

It looks like the Kobo is about exactly the same size and the Nook Touch is slightly longer. If you need a case but can’t find one that you like yet, it may be worth a little hunting to see if a nook or kobo case or cover might fit the bill.

Extremely legible display, snappy performance
By M. Erb
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RWG7OQ5NMGUMW I was thrilled to receive my new Kindle. I ordered it Sep 28, chose overnight shipping and it arrived (Sep 29) just a few minutes ago. Usually I use a device for a while before reviewing it. In this case, I felt it was important to do a quick review right away because if it can help you in your purchasing decision, so much the better.

If you are a little perplexed with all the various Kindle models and are wondering if this Is the Kindle for you, here are a few questions for you to consider…

1. Do you need text to speech capability or have the desire to listen to mp3′s on your Kindle? If you can live without that, then proceed. This Kindle does not have a speaker thus is not capable of text to speech or playing sounds of any kind including mp3′s.

2. Is color important to you? This is not a color Kindle, it is gray-scale. If you are mostly wanting to read books then this will work for you exceedingly well. The e-ink screen is gorgeous, sharp and provides the ability to change font size, font face and line spacing. It even displays photos quite nicely, but in gray-scale. And you can even zoom in on images.

3. Is a physical keyboard a necessity for you? If you like to make notes and annotations while reading, you may want to look at another model Kindle that has a physical keyboard. Although this Kindle has a screen-based keyboard, it is tedious to type more than a few words or URL’s. It works very well for minimal typing but it’s not for you if you need more than that.

4. Is compact size important for you? Then this is the one to get. It’s thin, light and diminutive in size. Slips easily into a purse, pocket or inside pocket. It is so light which makes holding and reading with one hand for longer periods of time very easy.

5. Do you want to be able to occasionally use a web browser to access a web site? Well surprise surprise, you can do that on this Kindle. It’s an “experimental” feature but it works quite well. It’s been experimental for years, so I’m not quite sure why it’s still labeled experimental. But in any case you can visit websites, save bookmarks and it works.

I also own the original Kindle with the SD card slot. Compared to the original Kindle, this new one is svelte. Thinner, lighter and notably, the e-ink on this new Kindle is vastly improved. In low interior lighting with gray overcast lighting outside, I’m able to easily read the Kindle. It is amazing how the screen almost glows, as if it were backlit. Of course it is not backlit and in fact will not work in the dark. But if you have a small reading light, that solves that problem. Otherwise in most other situations you will pleased with the excellent sharpness and clarity of the Kindle text.

Page “turning” was very snappy to me especially when compared to my old Kindle. The black page flash that occurs on every page turn on the old Kindle does not occur nearly as frequently with the new Kindle. It now occurs after every 5 page turns.

The fact that there is no physical keyboard means that this Kindle is absolutely the easiest to carry Kindle ever. Fits nicely in the hand and the slightly grippy surface makes you feel secure in holding it… it will not easily slip out of your hand.

Setup was a breeze. The Kindle immediately identified my Wi-Fi network and as soon as I entered my password using the onscreen keyboard, I was good to go. Signal strength indicated very high on the Kindle and I did not notice any degradation in signal no matter how I handled it.

As concerns the onscreen keyboard, it was easy and intuitive to use. I don’t expect to have to use it very often and for me I’d rather have no physical keyboard because that makes the Kindle smaller and easier to pack and go.

You still get the typical Kindle tools, such as Highlighting, Notes, Annotations, Public Notes and a few others. You can upload PDF and TXT files and view them. You can easily transfer prior Kindle purchases to your new Kindle. You have the ability to create “collections” Once you’ve created a collection, you add items to it and this is a great way to organize many books.

I have not had this model long enough to comment on battery life, but I’m sure that based on my previous Kindle and the specifications that it will excel. I believe that reading 1/2 hour a day will let you go a month before needing a charge if Wi-Fi is off. That’s pretty awesome. It is charged via the included USB cable and that can be from your computer or via an AC to USB power adapter, or in-car power port USB adapter.

And don’t worry that the memory has decreased in this Kindle. There is still more than enough memory to hold well over 1000 books. And you archive books too which means they are just a click and a few seconds away from being downloaded back to your Kindle from the Amazon Cloud.

Regarding the ads… they are not objectionable. In fact (don’t tell this to the advertisers) I didn’t even notice that there was an advertisement on the home screen until I deliberately looked for it. It takes up just a small portion of the bottom of the screen and is no taller than an inch in height. I don’t know for sure whether all ads are the same size but the one I’m looking at is very unobtrusive. The screensaver ads are full page and don’t bother me at all. And of course, you may just end up getting a good deal on something. I LIKE the ads. Just today I got a couple from an ad that saves me $5 on a $10 Amazon purchase in addition to my choice of a selected list of Mystery/Thriller books for only $1. Love the deals!

I think Amazon has another winner on its hands with this ad-supported Kindle. You just can’t beat it for reading and I’m so glad I got it.

If you have any questions please leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.

UPDATE: 10/16/2011 – I had the opportunity to compare the display of my new Kindle with that of a friends who had a Kindle with keyboard. I’m not sure how old his is, but his display actually had a somewhat lighter colored background which made the legibility slightly better in my opinion. I was quite happy with the clarity, sharpness and contrast of my new Kindle until I compared with him. Now I’m a little conflicted. It’s still great, don’t get me wrong, But it’s not an improvement necessarily over the previous generation as far as I can tell. It’s also possible that there are variations in the e-ink display depending on the luck of the draw. I may question Amazon about this and will report back here if I do. I’d still get this in a heartbeat, but just wanted to let you know about the contrast issue.

UPDATE: 10/17/2011 – There is a new firmware update for the Kindle that addresses the page refresh issue. The new version is 4.0.1 If installed, you will see an additional option in the Settings panel on page 3 called “Page Refresh.” This allows you to have the Kindle refresh the page at each page turn (the screen flashes black briefly.) Otherwise the Kindle will not refresh the page until after each 5 page turns.

UPDATE: 10/19/2011 – I called Amazon Kindle Support to discuss the screen darkness issue I mentioned above. They said they’d send a replacement which I’ve just received. I’m happy to say that the screen background is in fact -slightly- lighter in color on the new Kindle I just received. I’m happy and probably would have still been happy had I not replaced it. But at least I am psychologically satisfied now. The difference in background color was extremely subtle so I wouldn’t worry at all about it if you are happy with your newly purchased $79 Kindle. However there do seem to be some circulating that are more obviously darker and if yours is one of those, then contact Amazon.

UPDATE: 12/6/2011 – Wow, the way these specials offers are going, this Kindle is going to end up being free. I just got another $10 Amazon gift card for $5 the other day. Plus a free Audible Audiobook and 50% off a Kindle cover. Loving the special offers.
